It’s Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month. How Can You Inspire a Girl In Your Life?

The veterinary field is filled with inspiring, brave, and bold women. And while many people don’t think about it, our careers are a part of the science field. As veterinary scientists, we combine anatomy, animal behavior and psychology, chemistry, and more on a daily basis. So, it’s fair to say that we are all dynamic scientists. In honor of Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month, we’d love to share some ways you can encourage girls filled with curiosity, excitement, and potential to go into the veterinary field or another science.

1. Bring Them Along to Your Pet’s Exam

We love animals and we love children. When you bring a little one along for your pet’s annual wellness check-up we love being able to answer their questions. We also enjoy demonstrating how much pets rely on us to care for them. As pet caregivers, we love our jobs and when young people see the joy we take in caring for pets, it can inspire them to do the same. We know that COVID has changed a few things, but soon, hopefully, you’ll be able to be fully inside our clinic.

2. When Gift-Giving, Consider Toys That Allow Girls to Explore Animal Caregiving Skills

Beginning with a small play vet kit is a great start. And as this young girl grows, you can continue to inspire her with a microscope and books on animals. You may be surprised by how much kids enjoy books on animal anatomy.

Other toys like science kits and ant farms also allow girls to explore the natural and scientific world.

3. Take A Trip to the Farm or Zoo

Zoos, fairs, and farms offer a great opportunity for kids to learn about the great diversity in the animal world. Kids are often struck by awe when they see how large some animals are and how bizarre others can be. Not only does this create lifelong memories, but it also lets their imaginations grow.

4. Allow Them to Volunteer with Pets

From fostering to volunteering at an animal shelter, caring for pets and animals-in-need gives girls hands-on experience and can inspire their hearts and minds. Volunteering empowers girls to make a difference and shows them how powerful they can be. It’s also a great opportunity to bond and give back to organizations that save pets.

5. Encourage Them to Get Involved in 4-H

4-H is a wonderful organization that believes in the power of young people to improve their communities and gives them a chance to engage in a wide array of tasks and skills among their peers.  They learn with their hands because most 4-H participants learn more through their local program than they do through books and the internet.

This March We Hope You Will Inspire the Girls in Your Life

While March is a great time to begin the journey in Expanding Girls’ Horizons in Science and Engineering Month, we hope you will encourage girls to achieve their dreams every day. Whether a young lady in your life is interested in becoming a vet, veterinary technician, or another role in the sciences and engineering, we know they can change the world. All it takes is a little forethought, confidence, and allowing them to give in to their imaginations.

Happy March and we hope to see you, your daughter, and your pets soon.
